Brood 13
June-August 2007

Brood 13 is a project I completed in summer 2007 as part of a Blue Sky Project artist residency in McHenry County, IL. Brood 13 was a series of daily, site-specific performances inspired by the visions of McHenry County youth and adults. Together with a team of youth artists, I used the Northern Illinois emergence of the 17-year cicadas known as "Brood XIII" as a metaphor for the work. For most of the Brood 13 team, 17 years represented a period of time that was their whole miraculous lives. Brood 13 was Alex Fayer, Erin Garceau, Selena Lester, Lori Moore, Elizabeth Skalecki, and myself.

On the first day of the program I asked parents, staff, artists and youth participants of Blue Sky Program to envision what they want the world to be like in the year 2024 when the Brood XIII cicadas come back. I asked them to write their intentions on note cards. Every day for seven weeks we chose intentions and made site-specific performative art work that embodied that vision. After performing 83 community visions, we presented 2 final performances and an exhibit of documentation for hundreds of audience members at Starline Gallery in Harvard, IL.
